Haworth Old Hall, Yorkshire

Any visit to West Yorkshire must include a day trip to Haworth which perches up high on a ridge overlooking a valley. The famous parsonage at Haworth was home to the Bronte sisters who were born in Thornton near Bradford but wrote most of their novels while living here, isolated on the top of the moors. Atmosphere seeps out of every cobble stone and lurks around every grave stone in the churchyard. The main street then falls away to the valley below and today is worth a wander, stopping off in the many tiny shops and tea-houses down the slope. Don't forget to visit the apothecary which still has all the original wooden counters and cupboards - perfect for picking up a souvenir or two.

The Bronte Parsonage

The Parsonage is now a Bronte museum so if you are mad about Wuthering Heights or any of the other Bronte books then you really mustn't miss out.
Haworth Old Hall

We have been here several times over the years having family in the area but I wanted really to tell you about Haworth Old Hall, originally a manor house dating back some 400 years, which is located in Sun Street at the bottom of the hill. this lovely old pub does a really good Sunday lunch but also has an extensive menu from traditional Yorkshire fare such as Old Hall Pie with slow cooked steak and Jennings Cumberland Ale to the more European tortellini, Warm french brie. They even serve a delicious sounding vegetarian curry. A pretty perfect day would include a visit to the Parsonage, a wander down the high-street then lunch at Haworth Old Hall.
Haworth Old Hall

Those that remember the film, The Railway Children (or in fact the TV programme too) can then visit Haworth station which starred as the station in the film. The Parsonage also played a part being the home of  the local Doctor, and Three Chimneys where the children lived is just along the ridge from The Parsonage - again a splendid walk... You can even see the railway tunnel where the children rescued the boy whose leg was trapped in the rails and in the path of an approaching steam-train! Here are the details of The Railway Children Walk part one and here is The Railway Children Walk part two

More spring cleaning

Technology offers so many opportunities to help improve users’ lives. This means it is really important to focus or we end up doing too much with too little impact. So today we’re winding down a bunch more features—bringing the total to nearly 60 since we started our “spring” clean last fall.
  • AdSense for Feeds was designed to help publishers earn revenue from their content by placing ads on their RSS feeds. Starting October 2, we’ll begin to retire this feature—and on December 3 we’ll close it. Publishers can continue to use FeedBurner URLs powered by Google, so they won’t need to redirect subscribers to different URLs. For more information visit the AdSense Help Center.
  • Classic Plus is a Google Search feature that lets people upload or select images to use as a background on Google.com. Users won’t be able to upload new pictures starting from October 16, and we'll turn the service off in November 2012. You'll continue to have access to any images you've uploaded.
  • Google storage in Picasa and Drive will be consolidated over the next few months, so users will have five GB of free storage across both services. If you’re paying for storage, your free storage will now be counted towards your total. So if you buy a 100GB plan, it will give you 100GB of total storage instead of adding to what you already had. We believe this approach will make it much easier for users. For both free and paid storage, people at or near their current storage limits will have the same amount of storage after this change.
  • Spreadsheet Gadgets were designed to allow people to add customized features to Google Spreadsheets. But most popular gadgets have now been added directly into charts in spreadsheets. So we will slowly start turning off Gadgets in Spreadsheets next year.
  • Starting on October 15, we'll stop issuing and displaying Google News Badges, as well as showing Recommended Sections. People can still tailor their Google News experience by adding custom sections or adjusting the frequency with which news sources appear.
  • We've merged Insights for Search into a revamped Google Trends. You can now see search trends and compare search volume patterns across specific regions, categories, time frames and properties in a single place: google.com/trends. We will no longer support Trends for Websites, which allowed people to compare traffic to and audiences of different websites.
  • Places Directory was an Android app that helped people find nearby places of interest. We've removed the app from Google Play and are taking down the Places Directory site because users can find everything in Google Maps for Mobile, which offers a much better user experience.
  • We introduced +1 Reports in Webmaster Tools to help publishers measure +1 activity on their pages. Given that webmasters now use Social Reports in Google Analytics to get a wider view of social activity (including +1’s), we'll be discontinuing the stand-alone +1 Reports on November 14. Measuring social media remains a priority for Google Analytics, so stay tuned for future improvements.
We want people to have a beautifully simple experience when using Google. These changes will enable us to focus better so that we can do more to help improve the products that millions of people use multiple times a day.

Super Eagles player, Victor Moses, becomes dad at 21

Well, we all know 21 is probably his football age (Dec 12, 1990), but he's still a young dude. The Super Eagles and Chelsea footballer announced on Twitter a few hours ago that he's now a dad.

Congrats to him.

Top ten private jets owned by wealthy Nigerians: how much they cost

I culled this report from Encomium magazine. Quite revealing. See it below...
More exciting revelations have emerged that the penchant for private jets acquisition has cost wealthy Nigerians over N1 trillion in five years. The luxury trend actually rose by 650% between 2007 and 2012, this has increased the rate of private jet acquisition from 20 in 2007 to over 150 in 2012 which has placed Nigeria  and china as the fastest growing private jets markets in the world.

Dear Linda, I don't know if someone has already sent you this story. This beast was killed today at Madonna University, Elele. They killed a small one and the bigger one came for revenge. We hear more will be coming. Everybody is scared in the school.
What is that thing? And if you're a Madonna University student, did this really happen in your school today?

Woman supposedly gives birth to half-human, half-goat in Jigawa

And yet another bizarre story. Uhhhhh! This time coming from Jigawa. A woman supposedly gave birth to what you see above; a baby with goat legs and no neck, at the General hospital in Jahun, Jigawa State.

How is this even possible? And please I don't want to hear witches and wizards...:-). What exactly are we looking at here?

More renewable energy for our data centers

We announced our commitment to carbon neutrality back in 2007, and since then we’ve been finding ways to power our operations with as much renewable energy as possible. In our latest step toward this end, we just signed an agreement with the Grand River Dam Authority (GRDA) to green the energy supply to our Oklahoma data center with 48 MW of wind energy from the Canadian Hills Wind Project in Oklahoma, which is expected to come online later this year.

We’ve been working with GRDA, our local utility, to procure additional renewable energy since we “plugged in” our data center in 2011, and in February of 2012, GRDA approached us about purchasing power from Canadian Hills. In conjunction with the electricity GRDA already supplies Google to operate its data center, Google will pay GRDA a premium to purchase renewable energy generated by Canadian Hills. This brings the total amount of renewable energy for which Google has contracted to over 260 MW.

This agreement is a milestone for GRDA because it’s their first-ever wind energy project. It’s also a milestone for Google because it’s a little different from the previous Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) we’ve signed, where we agreed to buy the energy directly from the developer who built the wind farm. This agreement, by contrast, marks the first time we’ve partnered with a utility provider to increase the amount of renewable energy powering one of our data centers.

Although both options can make sense depending on the circumstances, we’re excited about this collaboration because it makes the most of our respective strengths: utilities like GRDA are best positioned to integrate renewable energy into their generation mix and to deliver power; we’re a growing company with a corporate mandate to use clean energy for our operations in a scalable way. We’ve been working closely with all of our utility partners to find ways to source renewables directly, and we look forward to working with other suppliers to deliver clean energy to our data centers.

The Life Edit takes a walk with Instagram

Start at the splendid St Paul's Cathedral. Photo by Jiri Siftar.

I love walking in London. For me it beats the countryside, I'm that much of a city girl, and with a city as diverse and historic as ours, it's constantly changing and full of surprises. I realise I won't get to see it all in my lifetime- it's just too big, and also I do tend to return to my favourite haunts throughout the year to see what has changed and what is new and exciting. Even in historic settings like the South Bank there are always changes and new things to see. So with the help of the fabulous Instagram photographer Jiri Siftar and egged on by Bupa, whose latest campaign is to get us all walking more to maintain our health, I'm sharing with you one of my favourite weekend walks from St Paul's on the North Bank to The Anchor pub downstream on the South Bank. Here is some of my walk plotted out but to see all the photos and the full walk check it out on Google Maps

Get out and get walking - you'll learn more about your surroundings than you will in a car. Bupa have launched a new initiative and have set themselves a target to get at least 100,000 people walking (and this includes their own employees, charity and corporate partners) both now and for the long-term.

It's all part of the Bupa Global Challenge which is an annual worldwide initiative aiming to 'get people moving' and raising awareness of the benefits of increased walking for good health and to reduce the risk of long-term diseases. It also supports Bupa's 'Well World' commitment, helping to enable 60 million people to make positive changes to be healthier and happier by 2015 and to reduce the organisation's carbon footprint by 20 percent.

You should get out there and walk, and to make it more fun I have one Black Jack Diana F+ camera to giveaway to accompany you. All you need to do is leave a comment telling me your own favourite walk. Alternatively tweet me on @scaredcrows #walkthisway. All entries will be entered into a draw which I will draw on October 5th.

Dive into the Great Barrier Reef with the first underwater panoramas in Google Maps

Today we’re adding the very first underwater panoramic images to Google Maps, the next step in our quest to provide people with the most comprehensive, accurate and usable map of the world. With these vibrant and stunning photos you don’t have to be a scuba diver—or even know how to swim—to explore and experience six of the ocean’s most incredible living coral reefs. Now, anyone can become the next virtual Jacques Cousteau and dive with sea turtles, fish and manta rays in Australia, the Philippines and Hawaii.

Get up close and personal with sea turtles at Heron Island, Great Barrier Reef

Starting today, you can use Google Maps to find a sea turtle swimming among a school of fish, follow a manta ray and experience the reef at sunset—just as I did on my first dive in the Great Barrier Reef last year. You can also find out much more about this reef via the World Wonders Project, a website that brings modern and ancient world heritage sites online.

At Apo Island, a volcanic island and marine reserve in the Philippines, you can see an ancient boulder coral, which may be several hundred years old. And in the middle of the Pacific, in Hawaii, you can join snorkelers in Oahu’s Hanauma Bay and drift over the vast coral reef at Maui's Molokini crater.

We’re partnering with The Catlin Seaview Survey, a major scientific study of the world’s reefs, to make these amazing images available to millions of people through the Street View feature of Google Maps. The Catlin Seaview Survey used a specially designed underwater camera, the SVII, to capture these photos.

Whether you’re a marine biologist, an avid scuba diver or a landlocked landlubber, we encourage you to dive in and explore the ocean with Google Maps. Check out our complete underwater collection, featuring a Google+ underwater Hangout from the Great Barrier Reef. And you can always explore more imagery from around the world by visiting maps.google.com/streetview.

Wife, 69, loses five stone so she can give her husband a life-saving kidney as she was too fat to go under the knife

  • Couple have been married for nearly 50 years
  • Wife slimmed down from a size 26 to a size 14 so she could donate her kidney
  • This is what love is all about, Mrs Moule says

  • A devoted wife shed five stone to give her husband one of her kidneys and save his life.
Pat Moule, 69, slimmed down from 16 stone nine pounds after surgeons told her she was ‘too fat’ to have a transplant operation for David, 72.
The retired couple, who have been married for nearly 50 years, were devastated when doctors told them Mr Moule’s failing kidneys were functioning at just 12 per cent.

When they broke the news a year ago, Mrs Moule couldn’t walk up the stairs without getting out of breath and was told she was too overweight to undergo the vital op.
Determined to help her husband, Pat managed to shed the extra pounds and passed stringent tests marking her out as a compatible donor.

At 11 stone five pounds, she is a shadow of her former self and is counting the days until the transplant surgery - which carries a one-in-3,000 risk of death.
Mrs Moule said: 'David is my best friend as well as my husband and I honestly cannot imagine not having him with me.
Devoted: Mrs Moule said 'I would not want to be here without him'

Devoted: Mrs Moule said 'I would not want to be here without him'
'I would not want to be here without him and I know that by losing this weight it will make my life better as well.
'We will be able to do so much more.'together she said.

    Wonder they say never end

Sage Radachowsky, who lives in Boston in a 120-square foot house he built atop a car trailer, says the materials for his house cost around $3,000. (He rents a driveway to park it, but says the driveway costs less than a typical small room in Boston.)
Here's a look at why these tiny home-dwellers chose to downsize and how they made the transition:
Low (or no) mortgage. Webster and Radachowsky have no mortgage on their homes, which can be freeing both financially and personally. "My life is less expensive, which gives me more time to enjoy it," says Radachowsky, who goes hiking, writes songs, build guitars, and grows food in a small garden.
Fivecoat-Campbell took out a mortgage, but she says it might be preferable to go mortgage-free on a smaller home. Back when she and her husband owned two homes, they were on a balloon payment for the lake house and worried that an interest rate hike might price them out of the house. They spent eight months searching for a bank that would allow them to refinance. "[Companies] couldn't find anything comparable to the house," she says. "There are small houses and trailers but nothing like our house. That's where we ran into trouble refinancing, but we did find a local bank that would refinance us."
Lower utility costs. Tiny house-dwellers have several options for utilities. If building codes allow it, Diedrickson says they can install electricity and plumbing as they would in a regular house, but that's generally more expensive than going off the grid. "The majority of the world still uses outhouses," he points out. "There are different toilets on the market, like composting toilets, that in essence turn your waste into ash or usable compost, so you can bypass having to have a septic system at all."

Celebrating the spirit of entrepreneurship with the new Google for Entrepreneurs

Startups and entrepreneurs have the power to build technologies and creative solutions that transform the world and move us forward. Innovation is happening everywhere: There are approximately 400 million entrepreneurs across 54 countries, and 69 million early-stage entrepreneurs offering new products and services. As Google turns 14 this month, we’re celebrating this creative spirit and officially launching Google for Entrepreneurs, the umbrella for our several dozen programs and partnerships around the world that support startups and entrepreneurs.

    Our focus is threefold:
    1. Partnerships with strong organizations that serve entrepreneurs in local communities
    2. Google-led programs to bring our teams and our tools directly to entrepreneurs
    3. Placing relevant Google tools in the hands of startups as they are getting off the ground and ready to scale

We’re already on a roll, with current projects ranging from support for the annual journey of entrepreneurship through India by train, to partnering with a number of accelerator and incubator programs around the world, like iHub in Kenya and Le Camping in France. And, this week, we’re rolling out our newest partnership: teaming up with Women 2.0 to bring their Founder Friday events to more cities. These events bring together current and aspiring female entrepreneurs once a month to connect with mentors and one another to build community. We’re partnering to launch Founder Fridays in Detroit, New Orleans, Sao Paulo and Moscow over the next year.

To celebrate both our birthday and the spirit of entrepreneurship that’s helped get us where we are today, we are hosting our first annual Google for Entrepreneurs Week, which will bring together more than 3,000 entrepreneurs and Googlers around the world. We kicked off over the weekend with a Startup Weekend event hosted at the Google Ventures Startup Lab in Mountain View, Calif., where Bay Area entrepreneurs came together to create their own startups in 54 hours. Over the course of the next week, Googlers in 28 cities across 13 countries will be hosting an event in their communities to bring their passion and expertise to local entrepreneurs. We’re teaming with a number of partners to make this happen, including the Idea Village in New Orleans, Communitech in Waterloo, Tetuan Valley in Wroclaw, the Branson Centre of Entrepreneurship in Johannesburg and the Council Bluffs Chamber of Commerce in Iowa.

For more on these existing programs and to stay connected on upcoming events, visit google.com/entrepreneurs and follow us on G+.

REVEALING! Smoking Marijuana Relaxes Me - Genevieve Nnaji

According to veteran producer, Charles Novia, Genevieve Nnaji has a secret dirty habit of smoking, which alot of people didnt know about:

     QUOTE .
I remember on the third day of recording, one night while shooting at a clinic in Victoria Garden City Extension, I came out for a bit of fresh air while the technical people were setting up for the next scene. I saw Genevieve in a dark corner of the building, smoking a cigarette. ‘Whoops!

You caught me’, she said, laughing. ‘You smoke?’ I asked, a bit surprised. ‘Now and then. It relaxes me ’ she said. ‘Do you smoke?’ ‘Never have. Never will. But I don’t have any problems with people who smoke though.

But health wise, I hope you stop soon.’ I replied. ‘I am trying to. Sit with me a bit, lets talk about this scene ’ I sat with her and I explained some few things to her about the scene. We also talked about a bit of her stardom and how she was coping with it.

She was in a chatty mood and it was a revealing conversation. That evening, I saw a vulnerability in her, I had never seen before. This young lady, by a dint of her talent, hard work or fortune, had superstardom thrust upon her and seemed to have no private life anymore.

She had become one of the most recognizable faces in the continent and whilst enjoying the adulation, she was also coming to terms with the scrutiny of her Privacy, which was not too palatable to her.

I admired her courage and somehow felt that she would go places beyond Nollywood. I remember I told her so. Genevieve was quite particular about make-up. She would spend many minutes, ensuring that her face was well-powdered.

    A week of utter madness...

This has been a particularly hard 10 days for me. My glorious holiday in the Caribbean is a long distant memory as I came back to a seriously busy period. First off was London Fashion Week which I have posted about already. I don't do the shows (been there, done that, got the bruises) but we do host a suite at One Aldwych providing TLC for fashion and beauty bloggers who are on their feet all day.

This is exhausting as we are on the go all day with fetching and carrying and generally running around to make sure that our partner clients and our blogs are happy - it is all quite stressful. That came to an end at the beginning of the week but there was no respite there. Oh no, for I was going into a week and weekend of enormous change. Both my babies (yes, to me they still are) were leaving the nest for university on the same weekend. One to her second year at Leeds, the other for the first time to Sheffield. So along with working at full tilt to catch-up with everything neglected due to LFW, I had to prepare for a big weekend in the parental calendar...

Why is it when you are feeling at your most 'raw' emotionally and need the strength of a minor god (just a minor one will do) you find that it coincides with 'time-of-life' stuff that makes you feel extra weepy and sweaty and anxious? It really is just not fair! You worry about them being alright of course, but when you have had them to include in everything you do from the minute you wake up to the minute your head hits the pillow for at least 18 years, then suddenly you don't, it's a very, very strange feeling. Without feeling too much self-pity you can't help being a bit introspective about what life will be like when the house is quiet and you're not 'double-thinking' for other people the whole time... Plus the sheer volume of brain power it takes to ensure that they are fully equipped with everything they need - after all they are no longer around the corner...

So when Dove Deodorant approached me asking if I would trial their Dove Original deodorant, putting it thorough it's paces for at least a week I thought 'Well, I have just the week!'! So here is proof that I am not making things up - part of my hallway this Saturday morning and an opportunity to plug the sponsors of this post!

So I started using these deodorants the minute I received them - they are not my usual brand so I can genuinely say this was a first trial for me.

Saturday was a long day. First off we had to pick up the van from a good 25 minutes away and drive both car and van back. Then we had to load said van with enough stuff for a student accommodation flat and a student house all the way from London in Yorkshire. Pots, pans, duvets, enough clothing to not have to visit a laundrette for at least a month, printers, laptops, enough shoes to create a shoe-mountain, books (well a few), glasses (wine and shot), rugs, posters - all the things a 21st Century student labels 'essential' were loaded into the van.

I then had to shoot with eldest daughter to the underground to catch a train to Sheffield (the van only took two people) to then be reunited for the first van load to be unloaded and carried two flights to the new student room of daughter number two.

Two hours of unpacking and moving in ensued, then I had to take unwanted items and suitcases to Sheffield station to catch a train to Leeds for part two of the moving in exercise...

Then it was a drive to Bradford to spend a drunken night with my sister-in-law where, to my shame after such a splendid dinner, I fell asleep on the table. Yes, really, I did, that was the level of physical and emotional exhaustion...

The next day we walked the hills around Haworth and had a pub lunch which was a welcome break then it was back in the van for the long-haul through driving rain to London.

It is always difficult to write about a deodorant and normally I would have balked at doing so - but as I knew I would really be putting anything like this through it's paces this week I was happy to do so. Results? Well I certainly didn't feel the need to refresh it at all during such a mad weekend so I can only say, it really really works! I will be changing as I am sure my old one would need refreshing by the end of the day after so much but this one didn't!

    The lowdown...
Both the Dove Original Anti-perspirant aerosol and roll-on care for delicate skin under your arms. I shave regularly and there was no stinging sensation and my skin is not at all dry after using it. It also did definitely give me 24 hour protection as promised! It contains a moisturising cream which I believe does do the trick - I must admit I don't usually moisturise under my arms so this is quite welcome... Available from Boots.

This is a sponsored post which was well timed and very welcomed!

    Google News turns 10

Google News launched on September 22, 2002—exactly a decade ago.

Inspired by the widespread interest in news after the September 11 attacks, we invested in technology to help people search and browse news relevant to them. Google News broke new ground in news aggregation by gathering links in real time, grouping articles by story and ranking stories based on the editorial opinions of publishers worldwide. Linking to a diverse set of sources for any given story enabled readers to easily access different perspectives and genres of content. By featuring opposing viewpoints in the same display block, people were encouraged to hear arguments on both sides of an issue and gain a more balanced perspective.

In the last ten years, Google News has grown to 72 editions in 30 languages, and now draws from more than 50,000 news sources. The technology also powers Google’s news search. Together, they connect 1 billion unique users a week to news content.

    Google News today

As we have scaled the service internationally, we have added new features (Local News, Personalization, Editors’ Picks, Spotlight, Authorship, Social Discussions), evolved our design, embraced mobile and run ancillary experiments (Fast Flip, Living Stories, Timeline). In parallel, we have monitored our quality and challenged our engineers to improve the technology under the hood—increase freshness, group news better, rank stories more accurately, personalize with more insight and streamline the infrastructure.

Take a look back at the past decade in Google News through the top stories from each year and a few notable features that have launched in the interim:

It’s undeniable that the online news landscape has changed immensely. Smartphones and social networks have transformed how news is accessed and sourced, and shifted the relationship between readers and authors. Open journalism is the norm, and aggregation by humans and machines is an integral part of the ecosystem. New technologies such as Hangouts on Air have the potential to connect users, journalists and opinion makers and transform how stories are discussed.

Opportunities abound, and we are excited for where we can take this product in the next decade. While change is inevitable, one thing remains the same: our mission is to bring you the news you want, when you need it, from a diverse set of sources.

Arts and entertainment take the stage at our most recent Big Tent

What happens when you bring together the head of the Metropolitan Opera, YouTube creators, Comedy Central and Justin Bieber’s manager to discuss the Internet’s impact on arts and culture?

In partnership with the NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, our Big Tent in New York City, held this week, fostered a constructive and sometimes challenging conversation that saw more opportunities than challenges for artists through the Internet and technology.

While the speakers recognized the disruptive force of the Internet, they also saw the possibilities that technology creates for artists of all stripes to connect with audiences and tell stories in creative ways. As Scooter Braun, manager to artists including Justin Bieber, said, “I don’t think the music industry has changed as much as people think it has. It starts with music. All we have to do today is study interaction, which is the same thing we’ve always had to do.”

Many speakers saw the Internet as essential to their own creative endeavors. YouTube creators like Michelle Phan, Issa Rae and Julia Nunes all used online platforms to launch their careers.

Newsweek Daily Beast’s art and design critic Blake Gopnik, while seeing benefits to new cultural platforms like Google Art Project, reminded the audience of the importance of appreciating the space that contextualizes a work of art. His message of the communality and shared experience of viewing art live was one that resonated with speakers from the performing arts who stressed that the live experience could not be replicated or replaced by technology.

Google chairman Eric Schmidt made a surprise appearance and emphasized the power of mobile and new platforms to change the way we live. He highlighted how the Internet has led to an increase in content and lower costs of distribution. One of the accompanying challenges, he noted, is how, in this shift to abundant content and cheaper distribution, business models adapt to build audiences and deliver value.

The afternoon ended with drinks under a literal big tent, hosted by Cirque du Soleil, which launched Movi.Kanti.Revo—a new sensory Chrome experiment—to close out the day.

Each Big Tent gives us the opportunity to engage with our audience on the impact of the Internet and society. Our next event is on innovation and entrepreneurship in Seoul, South Korea. Keep up with us at www.google.com/+googlebigtent.

Shocking! Man Who Sells Vulture Meat As Roasted Chicken

For those of us who like to patronize roadside sellers of meat otherwise called suya, here is a reason to think twice – that meat you are buying might not only be unwholesome, it could be a Vulture’s. Personally, I once had an experience, Donkey meat was sold to me and a couple of friends as cow meat; good enough, we were able to discern from the taste, texture and color of the meat. But what happens when you cannot tell the difference?
Vigilant residents of the garden city have apprehended a young man in the act of trapping vultures with local stimulant (snuff) in Onne, Port Harcourt. While confessing of his crime, the man who is from the north eastern part of the country said he wanted to use them as roasted chicken for his suya business.

He also claimed that he has been in this roasted vulture and suya business in Port Harcourt for a long time
