Do you Know That-Failure To Pay Market Fee Is A Criminal Offence In Lagos

Traders of the popular Ladipo Market, Mushin, Lagos State, have been warned against tolls evasion.

Chairman, Mushin Local Government, Mr. Olatunde Adepitan, gave the warning during the formal presentation and installation of Alhaji Adedotun Oki as the Babaloja General of the market (traditional leader).

Before the appointment by the government, the market, particularly the spare parts section, had been enmeshed in crises, leading to emergence of factions.

Adepitan, who urged the traders to cooperate with the new leadership and government, warned that those who failed to pay their rates would be treated as criminals,

He said, "In Yoruba land, where Ladipo Market, within Mushin, in Lagos, is situated, every market must have a traditional leader. Ladipo Auto Spare parts market cannot be an exception.

"The responsibilities of the Babaloja will not erode the functions of the President of Ladipo Auto Spare parts market. I urge you all to collaborate, especially in the area of environmental sanitation, discipline and security.

"We want the Babaloja to use his wealth of experience to promote peace and harmony so that government can make the required internally-generated revenue from the market.

"Whoever fails to pay market tolls and other revenues at the market has committed a crime against the government."

He urged Oki to leverage on his ascension to encourage regular and prompt payment of the council's revenue.

"We do a lot to cater for the welfare of our people in terms of road construction, infrastructural development, schools, poverty alleviation, market development, clearing of drainage channels and security. All these require money," he said.

In his remarks, Oki said he would ensure the promotion of peace and harmony in the market.
